Hmm, so coolant flowing (creates bubbles--coolant filled above max) back into the expansion tank after shutdown (and only after shutdown for like 2mins) = NOT Normal?

Aww hell, I thought that had something to do with the after-run pump .

Thanks for the replies guys. I did not know about the cap releasing pressure.

Also good to know about the tension on the belt. I was quite worried for a second.

Have to get my hands on a 32mm wrench today to get the fan clutch off. Been thinking whether or not I really want to dig the thermostat out or not. Might be time to sell this thing.

Water temp guage went to full hot. I pulled over let it cool down and tried to make it the last mile home. The last few hundred feet, the guage went from hot all the way down to complete cold. The oil temp went to between the middle and full hot. I cant remember the numbers off hand. It may not have fully overheated but it definitely wasn't running cool.

Iv just had the very same thing happen to me I beleive.

Very cold morning, -12C here in scotland, car was running fine but just before i got to work, water temp gauge went through the roof & warning flashed up on dash. Pulled into work and opened the bonnet & released expansion cap and it all started to boil out, clouds of steam and boiling water inside the tank.

How do I know if this is a broken thermostat or just a frozen radiator?

Going to buy some more anti-freeze at lunch today.

Thanks in advance.

never remove the cap when the system is hot! the water boiling out will cause temperatures to rise EVEN MORE

Ya I agree. Your cooling system is designed to operate at a certain pressure. If you open up the cap when hot, your releasing the pressure messing everything up. That and it could scald you pretty bad.
