Default p0300 code

I am getting a p0300 code (random mis-fire), but in looking in other peoples threads that get this code they usually get a specific cylinder code as well. This is just a generic code. The car is running like crap and I can feel the mis-firing. I changed all the spark plugs and bought a new ignition coil but I am beginning to question if this is really the issue since I am not getting a specific cylinder code. Anyone have any input?

I guess the mass airflow sensor could be an issue as well as the ignition control unit....but I dont know how to test them to know if they are the problem

Are you reading DTCs with VAG-COM (aka VCDS) or a generic reader? Have you tried running the car with the MAF sensor disconnected?

Its not a VAG-COM that I am using, its a generic reader but reads all the codes. I have not tried running with the MAF sensor unplugged. With that unplugged wouldnt the car misfire anyway?

No you can run without the maf but it wont be as responsive and accurate, if it idles bad, disconnect the maf and start it up, if the rough idling goes away, clean/change ur maf.

you were totally right. I brought it to someone I trust more and it took him no time at all to figure out that it is actually one of the ICM's.

We knew which cylinder was misfiring by looking at the spark plugs. All we did was switch the ICM's around and BAM the misfire moved to a different cylinder. PROMLEM SOLVED! The part is on order now ($80 after market ICM instead of likly a $1500 ECU install, reflash, and whatever other bull**** that guy made up)

Thanks a lot for your help guys
