Phatbox install - Ultimate failure
Dudes and Ladies,
I am so demoralized. My phatbox install turned out to be a phat pain in the ******.
Thanks to absolutecq20v, for telling me how to get the doorsills off. If only I had better luck using my own brain.
The install is damn easy. Ran a cable from the trunk to the head unit under the doorsills, removed the lower dash, pulled the head unit, all good. UNTIL I realized I was holding the stereo plug upside down when inserting my pins.
Anyhow, here's a pic of what I'm left with. This is the actual stero wiring harness. See the little metal connectors at the end of each wire? See how the two orange wires to the left are missing them? Yeah. ARRRGHHHHH!!!
Anyhow, anyone know where I can get these things (the metal pins / clamps) from? I'm going to try the dealer tomorrow, but if someone knows of any alternatives I can fall back on, they'd be appreciated.
To make matters worse, when I went in the clean the car out, I accidentally sat on my glasses, and broke them. I can barely see what I'm now typing.
Someone get this guy away from the damn Audi!

No, not pre-wired. Bah! I think they ditched the cable standard in '02.
Honestly, though, running the cable and inserting the pins is totally easy. I honestly can't believe I screwed up like I did (on probably the easiest part of the install). Total brain fart. Maybe my lyxdesia has something to do with it.

Don't worry. The ends are available already crimped onto replacement wires...
cheap and easy at the dealer. Make sure you take the car, or at least one of the good ends, with you, as there are several different sizes...

Checked my '02 - has the wire in styrofoam...
I was actually expecting the connector to be the same as my wifes '02 Passat but was surprised to see the difference beteween the two wires.
Glad the wire has been run for me already...will make the installation a lot easier.

Yes, you can get them as a part from Audi...
I just bought some myself on Monday:
Connectors with wires already attached:
000-979-131
Price: $3 (12" wire with connectors on each end)
Connectors only, you crimp onto existing wires:
N-103-357-06
Price: unknown
These are for use in the 20-pin connector harness.
Thanks to TeddyBGame for the info.

For the future....You can remove these connectors succesfully by.....
pushing a very slim jeweller's type screwdriver into the front of the socket shell to bend the latch in before you try to pull the wire out. They can be re-used several times without damage then.
