Default Please help with fuel pump. How to diagnose/replace the fuel pump?

My car won't start, so I am thinking this is the culprit. The part is $240 though, so I would like to know before for sure before putting it in there. Anyway to tell if that is why my car won't start?

Has anyone replaced their own pump? Is it hard? Any advice?

Thanks!

Default The Bentley manual has a write-up on diagnosing the fuel pump

The first thing is to listen if it is running. The Bentley explains how to jumper a fuse to manually force the pump to run. Most cars run their electric fuel pump for about 2 seconds when the ignition switch is turned on.

You can try having a friend turn the ignition switch to on without turning over the starter. If you have your ear above the fuel tank in the trunk/cargo area, you should be able to hear the fuel pump run. This must be done in a quiet environment. {Note, I am not positive the fuel pump runs in audis for 2 seconds when the ignition switch is turned on.)

If you can hear it run, the second part of the diagnostic test is to pull a hose off of the fuel rail, and see how much fuel is ejected over a certain time period.

If you are adventurous, and want to deal with squirting fuel in the engine compartment, let me know and I'll email you the relevant pages from the Bentley manual.

Default Okay thanks, if there is no sound, does that def mean its bad? Its been sitting for a week now after

it wouldn't start. It cranks fine, so this is my next (and hopefully last) guess.

Default fuel pump is accessable by removing the panel that covers spare tire in avants

just need to remove the 2 screws that hold the front "hold downs" on the floor behind rear seat on both sides then lift panel out by handle you use to access tire. fuel pump is under metal cover that is held in by 3 philips head screws. you should be able to check to make sure there is the correct voltage going to fuel pump then and replace pump if necessary.this works on an allroad so i don't know why it won't work for you.
