Default Please Help! Tranny leak between engine and trans. UPDATED

Final update. So after letting the car sit through yesterday without driving. My wife who I assumed was going to take the bus this morning wakes me up to drive her.. I start the car put it in drive and add gas, revvs up to 1500rpm and barely moves. Nice.

2001 Audi A6 2.7T Tiptronic

So Yesterday I drove down a block in reverse pretty hard, and I heard some unusual sounds from the tranny when pushing reverse to the limit (almost like a crunching noise). (I was getting a parking spot in the city) so I parked, etc. Then later in the day I was driving back home, everything was fine, I got a phone call from an old friend while driving so I pulled over and shut off the car for like 10-15minutes and after the call I continued driving home. A block later the engine shuts off (at first I only noticed I had no power steering and slammed the brakes). I tried starting the car a couple of times, it would start but I would add some gas and it would shut off again a couple of times. I let it rest for 5 minutes, it started up and I drove the rest of the way home. I tried to get it to shut off again by revving and letting go of the gas a couple of times but it didn't do it anymore. So then today I was driving around and there was smoke coming from under the car (I do have an engine oil leak because I didn't finish the driver side valve cover gasket so I thought it was getting worse, but it didn't make sense why the smoke was coming from under the car). I took it to the local getty and the guys checked it out, at first nothing was leaking but once he shifted to drive when the car was on the lift oil began squirting out and they told me its transmission fluid from in between the engine and transmission (they dont do transmission work so they just dropped the car and led me on my way)...

I really hope its something simple like a plug or something, can someone give me a place to start looking. I really need my car. I love it!

Well,
If it's squirting out, it could be a line or the pan...you need to get under the car and take a look at least. Maybe you hit something and punctured a line or the pan, or maybe the gasket around the pan is failing. These are optimistic guesses. Even being optimistic - if your fluid has leaked enough, you may have done damage to the transmission itself.

How many miles on the car? When's the last time you changed the fluid and filter?

i purchased the car at around 100k miles, I have no clue what service was performed. I never touched the "lifetime" tranny fluid. Its not coming from the pan, its coming from the middle of where the tranny and engine meet. I tried to look from the top where its coming from but the top of the tranny is dry, the sides are wet... Its hard to see the transmission lines, if I could find a diagram that would be awesome, I have the service manual book but there isn't much in the tranmission section.

i'm downloading etka, anything else I should get? I really really think its a hose or a connection got loose or something. doesn't make any sense, especially since its from the front of the tranny, isn't the torque converter there...? i guess I need to find every hose and inspect each one. please god may this only be a simple hose. I really love and need my car.

If it's not clearly squirting from the lines or the pan, I would have a transmission specialist look at it- but maybe you can do more than I can. At this point, I've done quite a bit of work to my cars, but I don't touch the tranny beyond the fluid and filter change. If it was an external line I could fix, I might consider it...beyond that, it's going to get hairy.

Having said that - do you have the Bentley manual, or a different manual? Do you have a vag-com? You may have some stored codes that may aid in diagnosing the problem.

As for the lines - there are two rubber hoses that connect to the radiator and travel back to the tranny...that's where I'd start.

Unfortunately, from the position of the leak, I'm afraid you are going to have to remove the transmission...but I am reaching outside of my normal area of knowledge here....

I can tell you this - I had the tranny go on a car that I loved. It was a Bonneville SSEi and it was known for having a weak tranny (that car had some torque). I was in denial, even when the car would stop moving every 1/4 mile and just spin in place, or I only had reverse (hey, I had to get it home somehow). I dropped the pan and changed the tranny fluid...only when I dropped the pan, it became obvious that it was dead. The red and silver fluid was unmistakable. I had the tranny rebuilt on that car and drove it until it got totalled in an accident. The rebuild cost me less than a new car of half the quality would have cost me - and was better than new.

It may be a hose...look, look, look. I am pulling for you.

hose is optimistic..... im not so hopeful. unless its a DGS i wouldnt drive a german auto, the tranny is fine, but at the edge of its range on the motor its mated to.

I have the bentley service manual, and vag-com. there were no codes anywhere... I'll install etka today and figure out how to get to those lines. And since my engine oil is leaking i do think the hoses could be going bad, my power steering hose cracked like 3 times already, still didn't replace it, just had it repaired temporarily, ajajaj. if this problem is a simple hose then I'll fix everything on my car at once right away. I cant lose my baby!

UPDATE: Stupid me forgot to change the tranny fluid from my power steering for over 3 years when I changed my rack and pinion myself. Now I took off the driver side wheel and both inner boots are blown, obviously not a transmission leak but a power steering leak. THANK GOD!!! Continuing to love my german made AUDI!!! GOOOOOOOO AUDI!!!!

If you are running trans fluid in the PS system, that might be why you had the failure.
