I know this has been asked before, but I want good answers:
a6 99 2.8 stock suspension...
I like a solid ride, and solid handling..I'm not a race car driver...And I drive on average to subaverage streets...Mainly highways
I want aftermarket rims should I upgrade to 17's or 18's...

Ok, 18s since you can't go too wide with the tires...18s will work fine and give plenty of cushion for the rough roads. The will help eliminate some of the "flabby" feel going around corners...even in routine everyday driving.

I know this is being conservative. But, if you have subaverage streets to deal with and your driving style isn't 'fast & aggressive', I think 17s would be better overall. We have 17s on our A6 and think it strikes the right balance.
I wouldn't argue with anyone who says 18s are better looking. We just have too many potholes, etc. to make them a practical choice.

I can tell you that it would be difficult for me to stand 18s on the roads around here. I was actually going to upsize this summer from my 17s, but decided not to after destroying a wheel on a terrible pothole this winter. Plus, there is no need for me to add rotating/unsprung mass to my car : )
If you do go with 18s, get some STRONG wheels. Remember you get what you pay for (to some extent anyway).
