Poor mileage - MAF cleaning and spark plug wires
In my 00 2.8ATQ I'm getting about 20-22mpg in a daily 10 mile trip (park hwy, part road - but few stop lights). I just replaced my my plugs and have a couple of questions:
1 - what is the process of cleaning the MAF sensor? I'm not entirely sure where it is on my model and was hoping someone might be able to provide some guidance?
2 - When I removed the spark plug wire from one of the plugs I noticed that the black sleeve (the one that goes on the plug) would rotate all the way around without any issue, whereby all the other plug wires did not do this and were "locked" in place. Does this mean that I may have a bad plug wire or is this ok?

I have the 2.7T so I'm not sure exactly where the MAF is and what the removal procedure is for the 2.8, but it should be pretty straight-forward. The MAF is obviously somewhere along the intake pipe that runs from the air filter box to the intake manifold, and will probably be the only section of that pipe that has some wires plugged into it. Sorry for being vague, but I'm sure you can find a diagram somewhere (maybe even in your owner's manual).
Anyway, I use CRC MAF cleaner (http://www.crcindustries.com/files/M...ll%20Sheet.pdf) and it does a great job of cleaning the sensor WITHOUT damaging it. The most important thing when handling the MAF sensor is to NOT touch the sensor wires on the inside of the pipe. The sensor can easily be fouled by the oil on your fingers (along with almost anything else that might touch them).
Other than that bit of advice, it's a simple process of removal, cleaning, and re-installation. Takes about 15 minutes start to finish.

The MAF on the C5 2.8 L A6 is located on in front of the cylindrical PVC intake hose between the airbox and throttle body. The MAF has a four wire electrical clip that connects the sensor to the ECU. The MAF is located in a separate PVC housing unit along the intake hose and is connected to the housing via two torx 20 security screws (T20 or "Star" security screws). It is difficult to find the proper tools in some areas. I carefully removed the entire MAF housing and drilled out the metallic security cylinders to remove. Channel locks also came in handy.
After cleaning the metal screen in the housing unit and the sensor I replaced the T20 Security bolts with 7mm standard bolts with washers to make any subsequent removal easier.
Check out my photos below.
