Is it possible, and if so, how hard would it be to retrofit NAV+ into an A6 without the factory Nav?

I'm looking at a few different 2000 and 2001 A6 4.2's, and plan on buying one in the next week or two (anyone who knows of someone selling one, feel free to contact me with info). Anyway, I really like the idea of having the navigation, and before you post messages about how aftermarket unit are better, it is important to me to keep the steering wheel controls and the center cluster radio display. A few of the models have the factory navigation system, but the one I really like doesn't. How hard would it be (if it is possible), and how much would it cost to install the Nav+ unit in this car? Thanks in advance for all your help.

j/k...use the search feature and you'll find a good list of posts here to get info from. IIRC, it ain't a cakewalk to get it installed....
Also, see Stoney's A6 FAQ, there's a little of everything in there.

Links for Audi A6 Owners, C5 Platform, 1998-2004 (Frequently Asked Questions)

You'll probably spend about $1200-1400 before you are done....you can sell your old radio for maybe $125 on ebay.
Dan's Navigation site has ALL the answers to your questions, just take the time to read it. I just put one in my A8, and it is one of the coolest mod you'll ever see.

I don't think it's a very difficult install either.

I'm not so sure about that statement after doing two of them.....one a major mod (my single DIN A8) and another on an 00 A8.
I have to say, there was nothing easy about it. Now that I've done two, I could do it much easier and faster.
Believe it or not, the 00 A8 install took at least 20 hours of my time, if not 30. And I prepared with wiring diagrams, etc. Mine took 40-60 hours of engineering, and about 25 hours to install with major modifications.
On the 00, we also hooked up a Bluetooth hands free phone kit and integrated an iPod with the fog light switch/relay, but that's not in the time above. The bluetooth phone took about an extra 1.5 hours and the iPod took about 3. We also installed the TMC so it would talk to the dash, which is really, really nice.
The first time you do this mod, it will take some time.
I have a web page start with a little more info on the antenna install and the instrument cluster integration.

http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/navplusfacelift.html</a

and accepting that mine is lacking TMC and reverse wire, and that I used the up-front antenna, I still did the installation over a weekend. I spent a *LOT* of time upfront planning and figuring easy ways to do wiring. Actual install was pretty easy - pull Symphony, hook up wiring harnesses I pre-made, spend time with Mr. Voltmeter, pray, plug in Nav+. Once everything came up and ran, it took an hour or more to fold it all back into the dash, but that's not complex, just annoying.
Complexity level for a Symphony -> Nav+ install (w/o TMC at least) is barely above the fog light mod, IMHO. Buying an EFU and using that harness makes it tap-and-snip....
