Power Steering Hose Question

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
I've got a 2000 A6 4.2. Inside the smaller power steering hose which runs from the reservoir to the cooling line are 2 small metering-type metal pieces spaced a few inches apart and held in place by 2 hose clamps. I assume they regulate the flow of fluid in some way right? Anyway, I had to replace the hose and couldn't find an exact replacement in stock anywhere so I used a 3/8 hose, removed the 2 pieces from the old hose and installed in exactly the same position. Now the hose leaks on each end no matter how hard I tighten the hose down. Do those metering pieces need to face a certain direction? The car steers fine but the leaking leads me to believe there's too much pressure building up...possibly because of the direction they're installed? If so, how do I tell? Each end of the metering piece looks more or less the same. Thanks in advance!

Any chance you could take a picture of this and post it up? I don't know the answer, but maybe it will be apparent to someone who hasn't seen it before if they see a picture.

For future reference the two metal "flow/pressure regulating" pieces must face a certain direction. If you look very closely one end has a little more volume than the other. This end should be facing up toward the reservoir. I suppose this directs the fluid down towards the cooling line at a certain flow rate. Not sure why that would be necessary but apparently it is!
