Just thinking...if fluid is overflowing then it's because the pump is putting more fluid into the tank than is leaving the tank. Such an event would also tend to empty the lines/rack and cause pump cavitation if not running dry....thereby damaging the pump.

I would check the suction side of the reservoir/lines for obstruction or kinking. If the pump is sucking air somewhere that would also foam up the fluid and perhaps cause it to overflow.

I believe yours does have the servotronic, and my guess is it's bad! just a thought try removing the boot around the steering column, and look at the rack thru the dash, can you see a electrical plug, if so try to unplug it and see if it stops, or if you Have Vag you can probably check it their.

if the fluid is over flowing I can only assume it is pumping fluid out of the rack faster then it can go in which could be the servotronic unit malfunction.
but I have never dealt with a servotronic unit, my guess is be prepared to spend some major $$$. around here most shops charge about $1600 for the normal rack replacement in a A6. my current A6 I have now I bought with a bad rack and changed it
their also should be a relay under the dash marked servotronic and like a #863 I think

I recall reading about a restrictor orifice in probably the pressure return line from the rack. One guy had removed it and forgot which way to put it back in...one way didn't work so good.

Such a restrictor orifice would limit fluid flow back to the tank and raise pressure in the rack/lines except for the suction line.

???
