I now use regular unleaded.
Someone one this forum did a test and discovered that there was no real savings because the loss in power due to the timing being retarded (read about it here http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=3604 ) resulting in lower MPG which offset the savings at the pump.
In short, you pay less at the pump, but fill up more often. Your savings are negligible. (It is more psychological for me!)
WRT damage to the car, the manufacturer's recommendation is to use premium for maximum performance. You are not doing any damage to the engine.<ul><li><a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=3604">http ://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=3604</a</li></ul>

put premium gas in it. If the $4.50 per tank full is that important, buy a toyota. IMO

(whether on the track, climbing a hill, towing, or sitting in traffic on hot days and gunning from light to light), the more the engine tends to retard the timing to prevent knock. Thing is the ecu has only so much range to retard timing (memory limitations among other reasons), and if you encounter a combination of high load and low octane, the engine may not be able to adjust.
Also, you will see reduced engine power with lower octane (isn't that one of the reasons you bought the 2.7t - power?), and people here have reported lower fuel economy figures in testing various fuel octanes as well, so it may be false economy anyway.
