Default Price for leftover '01 2.7T

My local dealer has a number of leftover 2.7T's - what would be a good price to offer for one of these? In initial discussions they didnt seem all to eager to move them out the door. MSRP is around $45 and invoice around $41. Is invoice price reasonable?

I wouldn't pay anything above invoice. For a couple or three grand more you can get an '02 with the "improved" features and a year's less depreciation when the time comes to sell it.

Default $1k under invoice...

When you walk out the door, you have a one year old car...and you've just taken a $10k depreciation hit.
When you sell in 4 years, you will have a 5 year old car; if you bought an '02 and spent $2500 more for it, you'd have a 4 year old car worth ~$3-4k more than an '01.
Pay me now or pay me later.

I got one a month ago for invoice plus 4.4 percent financing. Figured that just about evened the score. Dealers around here (S.Cal) didn't seem that eager to deal either. Even though the economy's tight, luxury car sales seem to be doing fine, and Audi is having a great quarter. If you can get 1k under invoice, then God bless ya.

Default What is the dealer's true cost on '01 models?

What is the manufacturer's rebate/incentive to the dealers for selling off the 01 models (and is it still available)? If it's 3K, then the true cost is really $38K to the dealer.

If a sales rep are not interested, try the fleet managers or sales managers direct. Widen your search to other dealerships in your region. Some dealer somewhere at some point in any day may want to make a reasonable deal. Be patient. I'm not convinced that every confident-sounding dealer is having a record year given they and we are in an uncertain recession, there are more AWD choices (Jag X type, BMW 330xi) and new models, some potential mid-size lux buyers may be migrating to the cheaper entry-luxury segment, there was a huge backlog of '01 A6s that took some time to clear in some areas.

Finman and DWP are right. Since the resale value of the 02 is going to be greater than an 01 bought today, you may want to consider whether the added cost of an 02 will give you better value in the long term. I believe that there was a post recently about the resale value of an A6 quoted from money magazine (?)... take that to the dealer.

Good luck.

Default I agree, it is worth the extra for an 02 model (more)

If there were no changes and you keep your cars for a long time then maybe go for an 01. But the improves steering feel, stiffer suspension, better door seals and thicker glass are worth $2500 more IMHO.

You are the only one who can determine what is important.

If you like the car and feel good about the deal you make then congratulations, 01 or 02, they are both great cars you will fall in love with.

02 2.7T Tip.

Default I agree with people here about the depreciation thing up to a point. If you plan to keep it more

than 5 years, difference in depreciation is virtually gone. If leasing, get the '02.

Ideally you should have bought about a month ago or a little more. We used to have a lot of people who would wait too long and then come back after the incentives had expired. Those incentives either have expired ( like every other year ) or will on the 1st to 6th.

Unless truly desperate, if a dealer is without incentives, they might go as low as invoice. Less than that, and they may auction the car off to a third party who sells the car overseas in less than primary markets. Sounds like your dealer might be gambling that someone will be in love with buying the cars for less than the '02. We did that often. Find someone so caught up in the price here and now, that all other considerations go out the door.

Don't forget the 02 has beefed-up front brakes. As I plan on keeping the car past the warranty period, that was a real big reason to get the 02.
