Problem with random misses

My 2000 2.8 just started having a problem with very occasional random misses.
Typically one or two in a 30 minute drive.
No check engine light, no stored codes from a standard ODB/CAN reader.
Never more than one at a time.
138,000 miles
I was figuring after a day or so, a CEL or code would show up and give me a hint where to look, but so far no luck.
Trying a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, in case it is just a bad tank of gas.
Anything common enough to try?

Are you just feeling these misses? Or, how do you know it is missing? Obviously, a VCDS would be the answer to identifying the cylinder and frequency. Until then I have no suggestions as to where to look.

Yep, a few people suspected the fuel filter, but I would think that would show up under load. (Will probably do the filter anyhow.)
Looks like I have a chance to get a VAG/COM read this Saturday.
What about plugs? How are these things on plugs?

I had a 2.7 eat a plug, meaning the electrode went missing. One cylinder did it twice??? Then just went back to normal. Anyway, I would use VAGCOM in the live mode and just look at the plugs firing as you drive. You can see which cylinder, how often, and if only under load. If multiple cylinders then it could be one of the ignition modules. Lots of things you can monitor. Others here know much more than me.

Plugs are on my list also.
Need to check the record as to when/if they were done.
Boosted engines are a lot harder in plugs than NA engines.
What is the normal schedule for plugs? The car had full dealer service 0 - 48K miles, but I don't see plugs after that.

Looks like plugs are every 48K, and the 48K was done at about 40K, so these plugs probably have about 100K and 13 years on them (unless they were done with the timing belt work at about 122K and 2 years ago.)
Guessing I need plugs.
