Default Question about interstate A6 purchases

I've been semi-lurkling on this great board for the last 9 months and it's about time to get a new (to me) car, as the tranny on my 1989 Acura is Legend starting to go out. While I've narrowed down my choices to a handful, a used Audi Assured 2001-2003 A6 4.2 or 2.7T remains at the top of my list, for many reasons.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and, after some thorough searches on Yahoo Autos, cars.com, and autotrader.com, I've discovered that there are many used A6's that would fulfill my wants and needs. But they mostly happen to be located east of the Rocky Mountains! Seems that New Jersey, Georgia and Ohio are good places to shop for a used Audi Assured A6. Of greater concern is the fact that the prices on these used A6's are about 10%-20% cheaper than their equivalents in California or along the West Coast.

I understand I will have to pay taxes once I register an auto purchased outside of California for a California license. But are there any additional, unforseen things I should be concerned about as I shop out of state??? One friend mentioned that I need to be concerned with autos in areas that "salt" their icy roads as it creates advanced corrosion on the underbody of the car.

Any advice on interstate car purchases would be very helpful. I hope to purchase a used A6 by December.

Thanks for asking, 2turbos, but I would prefer to be the 2nd owner of the vehicle. Also, according to this past week's classified ads in the San Francisco Bay Area, purchases of Audi Assured vehicles are at 2.9%.

But should I consider being the 3rd owner of a vehicle, I will contact you. Thanks.

Default Corrosion is one thing that you have to be aware of......

...but shouldn't be a problem for the years you are looking at. Find out from your local motor vehicle administration what you need to "import" a car. Registration requirements are so different in each state that you really need to check. I bought my S6 in Maine and registered it in Maryland - of course I needed all sorts of stuff faxed back and forth......

Don't forget to figure in the cost of transportation (either professional or flight/hotels/food/gas) and the possibility of disappointment when you see the car....
