question about tiptronic's evolution..

i currently own a 1998 a6 2.8, and i have driven a 1999 2.8, 2001 4.2 and 2002 4.2--each more than a few times.
my question is pretty simple.. what has changed in the tiptronic's programming?
when i drive the 99 2.8(and all the others) the shifting is completely different. my 2.8 holds the rpms until either i manually push the tip up or it reaches redline (6700+rpm). note: i, personally, have not installed any modifcations on this car. if i start off in 1st gear from stopped i can floor it until it reaches about 6000rpm and i can keep it there, not that i do this, but just the fact that i can do this and not on the other cars has me curious as to the possiblity if someone (a previous owner) has installed a tip chip or simply if that's how the 98's acted. i personally like it. so all in all i'm curious as to see if anyone has this same functioning tip on a 98 or above or if this could be some vag-com'd/tip chip modifcation.

i got a 2000 2.7T with tip....i haven't tried to floor my 1st gear yet but every gear except the 1st will not jump to the next gear by itself unless i push the tip up....i think it's program dat way for every tip so it'll actually give u the "manual" feeling.....

The early cars ('98 and early '99) held on until redline, but had a taller final drive ratio than the later 2.8 cars. The later cars get the shorter gearing, but shifted early unless floored, as a way to keep fuel economy similar.
The 4.2 has totally different gearing and gets the early shift sequence to give better milage.

Well if it's news... I just got off the phone with the service tech of my local dealer about the Tiptronic issue. According to them, while the car is in tiptronic mode, the car will automatically switch to 2nd gear from 1st at about 2000-2500 rpm. All other gears will allow you to stay there until it redlines.
It's factory programmed to do this. I personally hate it. I want full control of my tip (This was possible with my old V6 GLX Passat). Some have said though that the A6 can be reprogrammed to allow one to run 1st gear up to redline (without smashing on the pedal). Anyone got the code to do this with VAGCOM???
