Question about transmission fluid change.

Question about transmission fluid change.
Should I have my trans fluid changed?
Audi says that the fluid in the trans is for the life of the car. But, since some of you are mentioning changing the trans oil, I have to ask just to be on the safe side.

Both engine and trans and the whole car 95k. Just wondering since
some of the people have transmission issues while the Audi techs say that you don't change it.
Hmmm.
Just trying to educate myself.

Change it. IMHO there are two camps on this:
People who have had their transmissions serviced correctly. These people will tell you to do it.
People who have had their transmissions incorrectly serviced (wrong fluid level, flushed, no filter change, wrong fluid etc). These people will tell you to leave well enough alone.
On our car, the trans started shifting poorly at around 150k. We did a fluid and filter change and noticed a huge improvment.

Well said. Also note that while Audi says it is lifetime....
ZF the maker of the tranny, does not. They say to service it. But as 4d4 says, if you do it wrong, surprise, you'll get bad results :-)
Even a car ( prent's) that had nto been serviced for 14 years shifted better after.
No flush. Proper fluid (OEM, not magic elixer brand)
Filled per spec at proper temp, etc.

have someone do it who knows how...
Changing fluid isn't difficult, it's just that the trans/fluid has to be at the right temperature to get the level correct.
You can drain it while the trans is hot and then refill it but it will be at the wrong level (IIRC it will be low if the fluid/trans is cold)...as much as a quart.).
Apparently the vag-com has a temp readout...I dunno if any of the aftermarket code readers can access that temp reading.

every 30k like clockwork....no such thing as lifetime fluid
as 4d4 said....if it's done right you'll have no issues, if it's done wrong you're in for a big headache....get to an indie that knows these cars well

4Driver4,
What were your symptoms on your tranny? I think I maybe having similar issues. I posted a new post about replacing torque converter, but maybe I should just get fluid flushed and filter replaced? I guess it would not hurt to try that first. Let me know. Thanks.
