Default Question on head bolts

I'm a little confused... I have followed the Bentley, and I have a few steps left, primarily removing the intake manifold and removing a couple of other bolts. I'm a little confused though... Though I have moved all the major hoses and wires, I don't see any head bolts. Is there something I've missed (like removing the valve covers or something?

Default Ya think?

They're called cam covers...generally once you see the cams you can see the head bolts on an overhead cam engine.

IIRC you don't have to remove the cams (my passenger side head on the 4.2 was just off for head gasket R&R). It generally is important NOT to rotate the engine or cams, otherwise you have to retime the engine before you put the heads back on....

Default Why doesn't the Bentley mention it?

No mention is made of removing valve covers, cam covers, etc.

Do I need to remove the rods, lifters, etc. to get to the covers/bolts?

I'm not worried about engine timing... it needs to be reset anyway. I have to remove the heads because the timing belt busted- need to get them fixed at the shop....

edit: I went back to the Bentley. Not only is there no mention made of removing valve covers, the diagrams show the valve cover in all the steps, including the one that says to remove the bolts.

Timing has to be reset regardless.

The Bentley tends to suck sometimes. I doubt that it was necessary to remove the fuel rail either.

Default There is a tech article on a 2.7 that may help..

they replaced the secondary coolant pump which is under the intake...maybe it's close enough?

Default That one I could see..

The fuel rail has to come off to allow the injectors to come out, and to allow th IM to come off. But I normally do rely on a real-world walkthrough in addition to the Bentley. I just didn't have one this time.
