Quick Survey on Secondary Air Injection Pump...
I'm still working on resolving my SAIP issue... (gets dark too quickly these days and with two kids... time to work on a car is hard to come by!!!)
BUT.... I would like to do a quick survey about the audible high pitch (vacumn) noise it makes. Does everyone's SAIP pump here make that audible noise? And if so.. how long does it run for?
If not... I'm theorizing that when one starts hearing that high pitch noise... it's a sign that something is going down hill either with the pump, the vacumn lines, the combi valves, etc.
Since owning my A6 for the last 4 years, I can't recall hearing any high pitch noise on start up. It started only a couple of months ago when my wife was like "what the heck is that noise!!" and it caught my attention.

When I had a 2.7T, it made that noise, amybe 1st minute or so of startup...
...and it was more noticeable in the winter when temps dropped. If you think it is louder than "normal" then have it checked out. If you are not covered by warranty, then go to an independent shop to have it looked at. If something is faulty, it should show up in a VAG COM scan.

The SAIP runs for ~100 secs when engine is cold, ~30 secs when warm...
If there are no DTCs related to the SAIP, then the system is doing what it is suppose to do, i.e., reduce emissions when engine is cold. If you have VAG-COM or other scanner, you could test it and the SAI system.

I've got an 00 2.8 quattro and I heard that noise also! I followed the sound to the front right of my car, took the belly pan off and a hose was disconnected. Reconnected it and it wouldn't stay so I used a little tape and haven't heard it since.
Hope you get rid of the "getting ready to take off!" noise

Mine started to whine after 4 years or so of owning the car. Lived with it a couple
of months, and then CEL came on. Vag-Com'd it, cleared it, next time at cold start CEL came back on. Turns out a combi valve had gone south - don't know if the bad SAIP contributed to that. Got both the combi valve and the SAIP replaced.

I actually pulled mine out......... and
........ disassembled it........ couldn't find the right bearings (didn't look very hard)..... so I cleaned it...... re-installed it and the noise went away. That air pump is isn't too hard to remove out completely for a DIY-er job. I did it without the bentley manual.
