Radio Issue

I have a 2000 2.8 A6 Avant quattro wagon. The stereo system is the Bose unit with single slot cd up front and 6-disk cartridge in back. For what it's worth, the single slot up front stopped working several months back, but that's not the real issue. Recently the sound, whether coming from either the radio or cp player, has behaved in a variety of manners. At times there is no sound at all. At times there is only static. Occasionally there is sound, but with only two volume levels, either extremely loud or extremely quiet. Sometimes the sound is fine, but then disappears with a loud pop. Or, after turning the unit on, there is no sound and then, minutes later, it comes on by itself. My initial assumption is that the unit has gone bad and needs to be replaced, but as complex as some of these electrical systems are, I thought it possible that there is another answer. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

Great opportunity to upgrade to an RNS-E!
You've already got the double DIN setup, right? Wish I had that in my '99. Installing the RNS-E required a *lot* of console work, along with spoofing the CANBUS.

That doesnt sound like the radio to me, in bose systems the head unit plays very little to no part in actual sound being produced. It sounds like the Bose amplifier in the rear of the car is bad, or having water drip on it.

I have a 2005 A4 cabrio 3L with a similar problem... Prospeeder... where is my Bose AMP??? and if it is located under my trunk lid... how do I get the thing off? I can unsnap the bottom portion but can't seem to get the top portion of the liner off. been all over this forum and others searching for answers. Called AofA, dealer and no help. Order the keys to pull the head unit to see if my output if frayed or fried... going nuts without my tunes!
I did have a water leak... fixed that.
