Default rear brakes

when depressing the piston, is there any other way other than the special tool that turns and depresses at the same time?

Default I believe Paul W had a great write-up on that; I recall someone (might have been in his article)

talked about using channel lock to depress the piston. The tool does make it awfully easy thogh. My local AutoZone lent me the tool at no cost - and I didn't even buy anything from them.

Default There are very inexpensive tools available at auto parts stores for that

this one attaches to a socket extension and has 6 faces to cover many types of cars. It costs less than 10 dollars.

Default Go to Checker Auto they rent a tool for free that pushes the piston back

This is no more than a 20 minute job for both sides with this tool.

$40 for this, plus the channel lock way, you take the risk of tearing your dust cover

Default I used that exact tool this weekend to do my rear brakes with the help of a fellow AWer.

It works fine with a second set of hands, but I don't think I could have done it by myself. You know, ECS tuning will rent you the special tool for a $45 deposit, most of which they refund when you mail it back to them.

Default I have this tool, and in order to make it work, I had to file the stubs on the face shown to fit

properly. You can do it by yourself, but two is easier. I've had a couple of friends that borrowed it, and I believe they did it by themselves too. After filing it, it works perfectly for the B5 Passat as well as the A6 2.7T and 4.2. I would assume it should work for the 2.8 also.
