rear view mirror retrofit from a C6 and compatibility

My rearview mirror started leaking the L in LCD. So far it's not too bad with just a little at the top missing. I know that it's just a matter of time before it's all gone.
Now... i really like the autodimming feature so i started looking for a replacement.
Found a mirror from a C6 that has a compass and also has a button to turn the dimming feature on and off. Sweet.
Tried the mirror in the car and the connector matches and has the same pinout. The dimming feature worked as well as the compass. Super sweet.
The only issue is that the mount for the mirror is different. By mount i just mean the little metal piece glued to the windshield, not the whole arm. I figured i'd call the dealer and ask for the metal mount. To my surprise, they said that the metal mount only comes with a new windshield. Crap. Now, my windshield is cracked and will be replaced but a C6 windshield won't work for the C5 that i have. duh... The dealer says that the part is not for sale by itself.
So, at this point my only options are:
- find a damaged C6 and get the metal mount
- get a mirror that is plug and play for my C5 but give up the on/off button that i really like
Does anybody have access to a smashed C6 windhield maybe from a salvage yard? I'll reimburse you for your time and the part. Just let me know.
If anybody has any other suggestions i'm open.
Thanks in advance.

i wanted to put an a3 body style rear view wirror on my a2 body GTi. it won't work.... the piece you are talking about is part of the window (made as part of the glass). you will probably need find someone who has an aftermarket window ( the real gangster ones) because they glue the metal piece on the window, not form it into the glass

not just glued on to it. The b6 mirror is plug and play replacement
I have a spare c6 mirror from making the same mistake.

that the compass sensor is in the arm.
I've done more complicated stuff than this... i just don't have the time but i will get it done.

...and some of the B6 models had the autodim feature with the shutoff button.
