Default Remember us chortling over VW Phaeton discounts?

It's not technically a discount, but in spirit it really is.

"FRANKFURT, June 27 (Reuters) - DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes division is trying to drum up U.S. business for Maybach by offering $50,000 discounts to hotels and resorts that buy the ultraluxury cars, an industry paper reported on Monday.

The same deal is on offer to dealers that clock up 5,000 miles (8,000 km) on demonstrator models.

Mercedes last year delivered around 500 Maybach cars, super-luxury sedans that cost up to $377,750. It sold 244 of them in the United States, Automotive News said. There are two models, the 5.7 meter long Maybach 57 and the roomier Maybach 62, which is 6.2 meters long.

Mercedes officials in Stuttgart were not immediately available for comment.

It quoted Wayne Killen, Maybach brand manager, as saying nearly half of U.S. sales went to customers who buy off a dealer's lot, rather than ordering a car to their own specifications.

"If there is one area we may have underestimated, it is the number of people who wanted immediate gratification," he said.

Mercedes is offering dealers the $50,000 discount on demonstrator cars because some dealers who sold their demos to customers didn't reorder a new one quickly, the paper said.

It quoted Killen as saying the new 5,000-mile requirement for the Maybach demo incentive will encourage dealers to drive the cars to events and show them to prospective buyers.

It launched the hotel discounts after the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas asked for a deal on buying five Maybachs, Killen said. The MGM Grand makes a Maybach and driver available to high rollers staying in high-priced rooms, the paper added.

Rival Rolls-Royce, owned by German luxury carmaker BMW , does not offer similar discounts in North America, the paper reported. "
