Default removing plastic film from interior trim? 98 A6Q

The interior aluminum pieces around the door open lever is damaged-- the plastic film covering the aluminum is bubbling and breaking, and the bright aluminum under this plastic film is showing through.

I was thinking that it may be a good idea to remove ALL the tinted plastic covering the alumimum interior, since it will then match the shifter indicator surround. Or should I just run to the dealer and get a replacement piece?

Has anyone done this? I read some previous mention about painting things over, but not removing the platic covering. I didn't want to do it and end up replacing the whole interior trim because it looks horrible.

thanks for your suggestions!

Default Are you referring to the protective plastic that just peels off?

Similar to the white plastic material that covers exterior body panels during shipment, only clear? It sounds to me like you're describing something that should have been removed by the dealer when the car was sold as new. Rip it off!

Default I dont' think these are protective covers...

this is a dark tint colored film that covered the horizontal trim
that surrounds the door open lever, the front vents etc.
My is a dark brown color, and I think it was made that way to give
the trim that color. But after a little wear, it is looking pretty ugly.

Depending upon the interior "atmosphere" chosen (Advance, Ambition, or Ambiente), this metal trim comes in 3 different colors. From what you're saying, it sounds like the metal pieces are covered with colored transluscent film to provide the chosen color. I always thought that they used metal pieces made in the 3 different colors. Does anyone out there know for sure?

Maybe someone with a new car can use a razor blade and try to peel it off
