Thanks everybody for all the suggestions!
Schnellmb: I've been using Castrol GTX 5W-30. Last oil change was about 3 months/1,200 miles ago.
I don't think it's seasonal temperature related. My garage is pretty much 65 degrees all year round.
MP4.2's mention of "oil anti-drainback valves" made me remember that it all started about the same time that I drove 400 miles with 1/2 qt. too much oil. [Apparently 10 minutes is not long enough to wait to check the dipstick....] Anyone have any idea if this could be related to the problem? Would the Risoline/Gunk clean these valves?

He did a lot of the installs for marinS4 on the B5 S4 forum.
Prices are really competitive for the budget minded
They can do everything from minor to major service, performance mods.
Griffin's a great place and Terry's a great guy. I've known him since he opened his shop in the early 80's. More importantly, I trust him with all of my cars.
But, if you're on a shoestring budget, Karmakanix is hard to beat. Don't be put off my the size and appearance of the shop; they know what they're doing.

Most of you have suggested that it's the lifters, but if their noise goes away after 10 seconds or so, then my problem sounds like something else.
Mine lasts for 4-5 minutes. I can hear it under load, but never while in Park.
Any more suggestions?
