Anyone done it and run into anything I should know about?
I am assuming the axle comes out, there is a rubber cap I pop off, a bolt comes out the flange pulls out and the seal can then be removed and replaced. I am assuming I need to procure a new seal, new cap, and one gear oil.
It's the passenger side if it matters.
Does any of that sound incorrect?

Try a repair kit from your dealer...looking at it will often tell you how it's done. Also, the repair kit might have new fasteners if new ones are required for torque-to-yield bolts....

That prop shaft seal that is at the output on the trans is updated now. You can replace the parts with updated seal and the 6 bolt flange that is needed for use with the new updated seal for 343.34 dollars. This includes the new seal, updated flange, 6 prop shaft bolts, the gasket and one quart of fluid. Or you can buy the old style seal like you have in there now for 21.88, plus the 6 bolts at .90 ea, gasket at 8.44, axle oil at 26.25 dollars.
Any questions let us know.

Jeff, I am actually inquiring about the passenger front driveshaft flange (that drives the wheel) not the prop shaft.
That being said, it looks like I need to do the prop shaft as well. Whats the deal behind the updated seal and flange? Is it that much improved? I could replace that old style seal a lot of times for 350 bucks.

i am in the midle of the prop shaft as we speak . the only difficult part is getting all the exhaust stuff out of the way ,
sprung at the dealer for the gear oil 40.00 CAD what a rip off . they wanted 35 for the seal .. ouch
only thing to know is tyou have to have all 4 wheels off the ground so you can spin the prop shaft so you can get to all the bolts.

We almost never sell the updated flange and seal. Once in a while through the service dept a customer will upgrade the parts but that's about it.
Oops, passenger side should have given that away, I'm sorry about that guys.
The pass side seal is 016409399B for 15.19 for a manual trans, and your 00 a6 probably has the auto p/n 01V409399 for 36.25 dollars. The bolt in the middle is 01F409359 for 1.81 dollars. G052145S2 is the gear oil for 26.25 per liter. All in stock.
That 16v rabbit must be a fun ride you have.

What a people using to press the seal in? I know there is the special tool (VAG 3382), but is there another suitable alternative?
I need to change this seals and am trying to prepare myself as best as I can.

Dunno about this particular application but I've used PVC plastic couplings with a plug in one end and a rubber hammer to drive various seals in. It can be a pain finding the right size coupling or close enough to file down the outside diameter to fit within the housing. Sometimes a big axle socket will work...they come in 40mm+ sizes. Take your seal down tø the auto parts store and see if they have øne big enough.

thought I would complete the circle here. Jeff has the right part numbers.
At least on the passenger side, there is enough room to remove the flange by just unbolting the axle (i.e. you don't need to undo any suspension bits to get more room for the axle). If you lift the inner cv joint up over the flange you can then move it back and to the side. You will need to remove the aluminum shield that attaches to the final drive over the inner cv.
The drive flange is secured by a cone headed bolt with a torx 40 head. There is no cap to pry off. Once you get the bolt out the flange comes right out.
This can actually be done very quickly if you have the right parts (which I was not sent the first time (I did not order from Jeff so don't blame him!). The passenger side seal is ~3 inches in diameter, so if you get something smaller don't assume you have what you need.
As for removing and reinstalling the seal I recommend getting a cheap seal puller and driver setup online. These are the kinds of tools that don't really need to be quality pieces and for which harbor freight is a good source. 20-25 bucks should get you a puller and a driver with a variety of adapters.
