Default Road One pics made me think---Racing Tape...

Where can you get this stuff?
Does it leave any marks, etc when removing?

It appears a high liklihood that the next vehicle for the wife will be the S4 Avant, so not exactly an offroad, ski-machine like her current Outback, it appears the 4.2 may be heading through the muck and crap to Tahoe next ski season and since I have decided I don't like the compromise of clear bra-like products, I have become concerned about sand/crap damage to the front of either the 4.2 or Avant.
The pics of taped up cars at the Road One event got me thinking this would be nice for ski trips. One ski trip can put 5 years worth of damage on a front end which I would like to avoid.
Who knows, I'll probably see pics of my car in some "spy shots" column of some mag, thinking it's a test-mule

I've used blue painter's tape -- it comes off pretty easily.

Racing supply shops typically carry tape. No residue when removed from lights/paint

Default Racer Tape (200mph tape) is a real variable...

What most people call racer tape is usually just duct tape in various colors, quality and price are all over the spectrum. I can pretty much guarantee that that is NOT what you see on that Ferrari. I've done many track events with street cars over the years and it is not uncommon for people to tape the front end of exotic cars. Ultra sticky R compound tires combined with high wheel speeds and tail to nose formations really launch those little stones at the trailing cars. My track car looks like its been loosely bead blasted on the nose.

The tape you want for protection has a very low level of adhesive, just the opposite of the "racer tape" requirement needed to hold your average LeMans fender back on. Generally a heavy coat of wax underneath is a good thing also for later tape removal. I would call around to a number of performance/race type shops and inquire about the particular need. The sort of shops where people buy their Helmets and Nomex for weekend track events. I think you'll find they know what you're talking about. I would be wary of the word "race tape" though as much of it is very heavy on the adhesive.... to get that 200 mph rating............

There is a 'Duck" (brand) tape I get at Wal Mart which is very inexpensive. It is an 'easy' release, has zero residue, and is exactly what you want. The package is labled 'easy release' or somthing like that.

That tape was kind of like a vinyl film, like wider electrical.

Default I don't feel duck tape is thick enough

Duck tape doesn't have a jute mesh or a rubberized backing. It is just a thin layer of plastic with glue on it. I'm glad it releases easily, but it isn't really thick or strong enough to provide any protection from stones, is it?

I'd be shooting for something more like gaffer's tape. It's quite sticky, yet removes and reapplies pretty easily. It has a fabric webbing to it, but not jute. It is also less sensitive to sun and heat than duct tape. Duct tape will break down and leave the glue below the jute on the surface and the rubber backing and jute will just dry up and flake away.

Gaffer's tape is unfortunately about 3x the price of duct tape which makes it far more expensive than duck tape.

Steve, it worked perfect for me at Texas World Speedway, and in a winter's long distance drive.
