The S8 has the most horse power, and weighs the least, yet the Mercedes outdoes it by 0.4 sec. But at least it was clocked at 6.1. Around 6 seconds or less is what I would expect out of an S6 or S8 for the money difference. The Audi write up was favorable, and even though they say that the Mercedes AMG was about the best on the planet, 105,000 is a bit much. The 80,000 for the Audi makes it a bargain. The 740i was actually MUCH cheaper than the Audi at 70,000. They did not rank them, but the Audi appears last int he writeup. They clearly indicate Mercedes is top of the Marque, but the writeups say they would buy any of them.

I think the peak torque is something like 391 lb-ft bs 317 lb-ft for the S8. The S8 tested seemed to be fully loaded including the $3,500 alcantara seating package. Frankly, I don't think this option is worth even half this amount. They are charging this much for it because it's on an A8/S8.

As for the liking of the cars, I have noticed long ago that English speaking countries magazines in the Northern hemisphere are biased towards BMW and Mercedes Benz. Maybe it's just that Audi's public relations dpt. is not as good as MB or BMW in both the US and the UK.
One exception though was a test in Top Gear (UK) April 2000, where they eventually preferred the S6 Avant to the E55 AMG, but upon reading it carefully, it looked like they were unhappy to admit this!
