Rough idle with flashing CEL
I have a 2000 A6 Avant Quattro 2.8 wagon. I bought the car a little more than a year ago. At that time I replaced the coil pack, ignition wire and plugs and had the cam chain guides replaced. The car has run well, but the coil pack failed after about nine months. That failure caused the cat converters to overheat, but did no apparent damage to the engine. The coil pack was replaced, and the car ran fine. Now, however, every so often upon starting up the idle is rough and the CEL flashes. This symptom may disappear after a few moments or may persist until I shut the engine off. Upon restart the symptom may not reappear for several days or weeks. In general, fuel economy is down.

step 1 - get a vag-com scan and report back.
step 2 - triage based upon information captured via the vag-com results.
Guessing on these issues is a sure way to lighten your wallet without actually addressing the issue.
