Default rough shifts from 2nd to 1st when car is cold

this is happening on a 02 2.7

when ever its cold out the car has problems down shifting from 2nd to 1st. its usually rough and not smooth like it is when the car has been driven 10-15 miles the shifts are OK.

i vag-ed the car and no codes were present.

fluid was changed at 63k now has 72k

also one more thing its been doing since i bought the car is when it starts from a cold start (and the secondary air pumps starts) the car does not shift to 2nd from 1st until it gets to 3.5k rpm
BUT if i start the car cold and wait for the pump to shut off and turn off the car and turn it back on it will normally shift to 2nd around 1.6k rpm

it feels to me like the car will shift from 2nd to 1st smoother once the tranny oil has warmed up. but one the car has been warmed its normal

Default The trans fluid is the question not oil, anyways.......

It sounds like the level is slightly low, for what it's worth because you have vagcom I would check the level when the fluid is at the required temp.
Buy enough to check, not going to get into the rest of the procedures because there are many and you can find this in the Resource section of AudiWorld or in a Bentley manual.

Here is a hint, trans fluid expands when hot and contracts when cold.

Default Delayed 1-2 cold upshift should be intended

...designed to get the converters to light off/get up to operating temp quicker. Also why the air pumps work to get extra oxygen in there to promote the same. My 4.2 does it too, though not sure it runs up so high in the RPM's for the 1-2 shift when first cold started.

Don't know about the downshift issue. But if you haven't already, try an adaptation procedure on it so the TCU relearns the desired shifting behavior. Search archives if needed for the "how to."

Default I have VAG COM, but there is a poor man's way to do it too

basically after starting it from cold and level and opening the access hole, do it by feel of trans. pan temp. When warm to casual touch, that's when the fluid should be right at the exit hole and then just starting to overflow out. May not sound exact, but in practice I find about the same as trying to read the laptop screen while also dealing with the fill, the dribbling fluid, and then putting the plug back in.

Audi specs a narrow temp range. These transmissions are sensitive to level. Why do all this work for a half-assed result?

Use VAG-COM. Do it right.

My "opinion" is that the factory specified manner of setting the level is correct way to do the job. Yes.
