RS-6 requires a special oil!

New M3 requires Castrol 10w-60 synthetic imported from Europe (I think it's available in the UK and
of course Germany). Too bad we can't get the "good"stuff like the Shell Helix and the good Castrol syth over here!

Castrol do a lot of work with VW group - developed longlife and PD oil specs together
The relevant VW group spec is 505.01, which covers oil for RS 6 and oddly enough, also the PD range of TDi engines..
Shell make a verison called "Shell 505.01 5W-40" (creative, huh?) to complement Castrol's "505 01" oil (also creative, huh?). Gulf make an oil to 505.01 specification ("Gulf GDI Extra"), Q8 have "Q8 Motoroil 505.01 5w-40", Havoline make "Havoline 505.01 SAE 5W-40" and I'm sure there are others out there.
It's all expensive. Last time I bought some longlife from a motoring store, it was just as dear per litre as from the dealer. I expect the same will be true of 505.01 oils, but I haven't needed to buy any yet.

Can you say Magnuson-Moss Act?
I was under the impression that it bans specific parts requirements unless the mfr can show the FTC that this is relevant. The specific language from a google search:
`In order to improve the adequacy of information available to consumers, prevent deception, and improve competition in the marketing of consumer products, any warrantor warranting a consumer product to a consumer by means of a written warranty shall. . .fully and conspicuously disclose in simple and readily understood language the terms and conditions of such warranty. Such rules . . . require inclusion in the written warranty of any . . . exceptions and exclusions from the terms of the warranty.' - Magnuson-Moss Warranty & Federal Trade Commission improvement Act, Section 2302(a)
Seems to me the TSB would have to note why the
5W-40 was required. Further, I would suspect Amsoil 5W-40 meets their spec. If not, A.J. Amatuzio would be highly interested in whatever
5W-40 mouse milk Audi was touting and WHO WAS SUPPLYING IT TO AUDI!

specific to FTC...I'll bet Audi hasn't got a waiver yet either!!
MAGNUSON-MOSS WARRANTY IMPROVEMENT ACT
United States Code Annotated
Title 15 Commerce and Trade
Chapter 50 Consumer Product Warranties
15 Section 2302
"(c) No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection be waived by the commission if:
1) The warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and
2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest."
The point is Audi cannot require their mousemilk unless they provide it. And since maintenance is free they can do so.
For those of you lucky enough to have RS6's, I would document the use of this mousemilk as well as Audi's lengthy oil change interval (8000miles?) and carefully analyze the condition of the engine over time. Mercedes just lost a hefty $25M USD settlement as I understand it for a series of engines using an oil change interval system calibrated to Euro synthetic oils but MBUSA didn't see fit to inform their NA customers/dealers that synthetic was necessary to achieve good results. Excessive engine wear and the class action suit resulted.
