Default before I went for my 4.2, I almost went for a lease on a 996 turbo.

Then I thought about practicality & having to drive the car daily. Keep in mind, I had a '94 RX7 as a daily driver for 6yrs, so the climbing in and out of a 2door each day...turned me off.

Still, I do see a turbo in my future...whether its the 996 or the 997, that's TBD.

But I like your taste in cars.

Default I am SERIOUSLY considering the Cayenne Turbo as an alternative

myself; of course waiting a bit for the hype to fade. We were probably surfing the Porsche wesite concurrently today

As I stated previuosly, I refused to be gouged for an Audi, so it's time to consider other options.

But the AWD I really LUST for--more then the RS 6 even--is the Maserati Kubang.

http://www.maserati.com/</a

Dump the X5, add the RS6 and the Cayenne. (A VERY cool garage pair!)

Default "Between the lines" ... Salt, sand, and rocks

Maybe this is a little irrational, but I think would hold a 996TT to a different standard than "regular" cars. In other words, I would feel a compelling need to baby the car, hand wash it (which I can't do at home since I have the hardest well water on the face of the earth), detail it every quarter, and do lots of things I really don't want to bother with. I would go insane every time a car changes lanes ahead of me on the highway and kicks up all the rocks from the salt trucks on to the hood. I would probably hate it with my toddler in the back seat kicking his feet all over the interior. I would never send it through an automatic car wash, which I happily do without any regrets with the 540 and X5. And I certainly wouldn't take it to our pothole-ridden town dump as the family trash car. It would look like I'm parading the car around and showing off and that's totally not my style. These are all things, for some twisted reason, I would not mind doing in a "family" car such as an RS6, M5, E55, or a Cayenne (as I do with my current car).

I view the 996TT as the Holy Grail. I would probably start to treat the car like the BMW fanatics on Bimmer.org treat their cars, and I don't want to be like that. Or, even worse, I would commit heresy by using a 996TT as a trash car, sticking poopy diapers in the trunk, or hood, or whatever you call it on a rear engine car. Now that would just be disrespectful. See? I'm already using terms like "disrespect" when I think about how I might treat the 996.

Darn it, Goodwoody, now you have me thinking about the 996 all over again. You just dismantled two years of therapy. ;-)

How about some room for passengers and baggage, "between the lines".

Default I just checked specs. on the Porsche website, not in the same ballpark!

The Cayenne Turbo is doing 0-62 in 5.6 seconds, that's about the same as a chipped 2.7t or stock 540 and a full second slower than the RS-6 or M5. I'd be the first one to say that I think that Audi is overcharging on the RS-6 but Porsche is no better. The Cayenne is a little hard to catagorize but it's not in the same class as the RS-6 as far as performance is concerned.

Default The choice is clear, I'm going for the RS6.

The RS6 is everything I want in a car. It's a family car that can kick some serious tush, yet flies under the radar for the "uninformed masses" which is exactly what I love.
