Default RS6 Upper Grill Question

I'm thinking of swapping out my factory upper grill for one of those sleek looking RS6 ones. I thought the brushed aluminum might complement my RS6 mirrors, and VagParts.com apparently sells the brushed trim for underneath the headlamps to match. EP Importers lists the grill at $170, which seems like a good price. I assume I'd need the RS6 Hood latch to go along with it for another $40. Here's my question. I know I don't have the patience to track down and properly fit the lower RS6 grill, which would leave me with the polished factory look for that part. Should that hold me back?

Default I have the upper RS6 grill on my car, didn't bother with the lowers. Also...

I didn't replace my hood latch.

Default Some options and opinions

First, make sure EPI actually has them in stock, (they BS'ed me on the S6 grilles back in the day so I found it somewhere else).

Second. search around a little before you drop $210+ on a upper grille and hood latch. I scored both S6 upper & lower grille with hood latch on this forums marketplace for only $200 shipped. Saved about $160+ over retail.

Third, you could always get the RS 6 lower grille and modify it, or, since you state you do not have the patience perhaps AW member Epicman1 will volunteer his services since he just successfully modified one to fit to his 4.2, It never hurts to ask. I found a source to modify my RS 6 trim and BostonDriver and a few others were all over that deal.

...and finally, you could always take some sandpaper and a little elbow grease and brush the polished finish to that of a more matching RS matte finish on your existing lower grille, if the shinny'ness is an eye sore once you have finished the upper and headlight trim pieces. I brushed my shift gate as did Boston Driver to acheive the look that we wanted, so can you.

Good luck.

I'd love to get by without replacing my hood latch, but figured I had no choice. How did you fit your existing latch through the RS6 grill? Did you modify it somehow?

Default Didn't have to modify it. The latch part fits through...

The diamond pattern in the grill. I'll try and take a close up photo of it tonight when I get home.

Default The latch will fit, but it's at an offset angle...should be modified or replaced...

for proper function. I modified mine because I had the grill installed and didn't feel like waiting for the right latch. BTW, Clair's has both upper & lower RS6 grills in stock. But I would think twice about installing the lower grill...it's a real PITA...!!!

Default Second on modifying the latch.

If you don't do something with it, the stock lever will eventually crack the slot where it fits through the grill. After that happens, you can't get the hood open. Ask me how I know.
