Hi-
I have a 2000 S4 and am beginning to think I need more room and an automatic. If I decide to go A6, which is faster the 2.7T or the 4.2? Also, which lends itself to performance modifications easier. My gut feeling tells me the 2.7T since I am so familiar with the mods for my car...love the flares on the 4.2, though. Any ideas of 0 - 60 with a chipped/exhaust/tip chip for the 2.7T A6. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks.

If I was getting the Auto, I'd go for the 4.2. The smoother power delivery is more important for an Auto than a Stick. According to Audi the 2.7t is .1 seconds faster than the 4.2. Don't know about mods.
I love the fenders and wide tires on the 4.2. If it came in a stick I'd have one.

... but for looks the 4.2 wins hands down IMO, and as a long-term vehicle I would probably prefer the V8 to the twin-turbo... cost aside.
But there isn't a lot you can do with the 4.2 in terms of performance modifications. Pablo has a chip and tip chip for his 4.2... maybe he'll post exactly how much better the performance is with the chips.
If you want performance, you've got it already in the S4! Going to a tip A6, whether it is the 2.7TT or the 4.2, the car won't be as fast as your 6-speed S4 even if you do chip it and upgrade the exhaust. But if you want the fastest tip A6 you can get, the 2.7TT is going to be it.

The 2.7T is a pretty economical engine when your foot's not in it. I find that my commuting mileage (avg 40MPH on surface streets) is close to 20MPG, which should improve when its well broken in. I think the 4.2 would have a much bigger appetite.

I struggled with this same question and ended up with the A6 2.7 sport / 6spd -
Coming from a series of S6's i wanted room and performance - I was torn on the auto as well due to the time I spend on the phone.
I can't say that i could be happier then with my new car - as much as I love the point-and-squirt manners of the S4 I love the ride and room of the A6 frame and longer suspension. The auto I held off on just due to slight concerns on it's abilty to handle the power of mods that i might make.
You give up a litte in sheer performance but gain it all back in enjoyement of everyday driving.
Either way they are both great cars - just different targets
Regarding Performance - I've heard of 5.2 as 0-60 with chip/ exhaust for the 6 spd.
tough decision - good luck

I second Busa's opinion. If you want the tip I think the 4.2 is a better choice. More power at lower rpms, power more readily available in auto mode. You can't beat the appearance of the 4.2.
For modifications, and if cost is an issue, the 2.7t is the best bet, you can do more with a turbo given emissions controls, etc.
Hard to go wrong with either choice.
