Thanks mate.. The problem is with the design of the Scirroco wheels, they'll hit the calipers if I take off the spacers so I either need to lose these wheels or live with the awful 'scrub radius'..

You will find that the car probably drives and handles a great deal better and your tires wear better without the spacers. That suspension is very refined, and putting the wheels an inch further out can produce some unwanted feedback and behavior. I was thinking caster jacking, but scrub is also a concern.
Do you really need 20mm of additional room behind the spokes? The RS6 has ET28 wheels so obviously there is some tolerance (the equivalent spacers would be 7mm thick), though its suspension is lower and the dampers are linked, so it may be designed for those offsets.
