S6 Gas Mileage?
I've done a search and see a wide range of numbers. City seems to be in the 15 - 17 mpg area but I've seen claims of 20 - 25 mpg for highway. I'm looking at one for the wife and she's interested but one selling point would be if it got as good or better gas mileage as her current SUV. It's a CX-7 and get 15 - 17 in the city and 22 on the highway at 70 - 75 mph.
I realize everyone's driving style and conditions are different. I'd just like a better idea of what to expect.

I would expect the mileage to be similar or a hair less than the CX7
I've had my S6 since late 2001 and it has always returned mid teens in everyday urban driving and barely 20 or low 20s for the occasional long highway trip. Comparing to an SUV/Crossover, we also have an Acadia which despite being bigger and notably heavier, has a more efficient engine and much lower (number wise) gearing. Its mileage is very similar to the S6 in the real world. Considering that your CX-7 is a bit smaller, and certainly up to date and efficient, I would expect it would do a hair better than the S6. The S6's real thorn in fuel efficiency is its gearing. It is turning about 3000 PRM at 80 mph highway speeds. My Acadia, and other more fuel focused designs will turn more in the neighborhood of 2000 at those speeds. Just my 2 cents, as they say, your mileage may vary.

It will be same at very best
I've never exceeded 21 mpg.
My highway typically is 18-19
My city is typically 15-17
its not a fuel efficient vehicle. but its nice.
probably has way more room than your typical SUV, and far lower center of mass.

IME those numbers might be optimistic for the S6
I get about 13 MPG in all city driving. I do get up into the 20s on the highway, but 95% of my driving is city driving, and hitting 15 MPG is a major accomplishment in frugality for me.

14 to 16.5 in town and just got 22 on a 90 minute 110 mile drive from Manheim auctions in
Orlando to St Pete beach. Have never seen so many Audi's except at the rail marshaling yard in Ingolstadt.

FWIW, the updated EPA rating for the '02 S6 is 12city/19highway
Granted there are plenty of flaws in the EPA system but I imagine those numbers are somewhat less than the CX7. It interesting to be that their combined number of 15 is pretty much what I mentioned above that I'm getting in everyday driving.

EPA S6 updated rating

EPA for the CX-7 is 18 combined, 16 City, 22 Highway
Real world is 16-17 combined, less than 15 City, 20 Highway.
Looks like they are comparable across the board with the CX-7 having a slight edge. The CX-7 is a bit disappointing as the EPA sticker says 24 Highway. I never trust them but I was hoping for 22 Highway. This is also coming from a turbo 4 vs a NA V8.
Anyhow, based on the responses I can expect to get slightly less gas mileage if we make the switch but it doesn't appear it will be much worse. But then there's the fun per gallon factor.

Still new to me, but I'm seeing...
about 18.0 around town, and got 20.0 doing 80-85 mph on the freeway home (1,200 mile trip).
MPG is probably comparable to the SUV.
Fun factor has got to be heavily weighted in the S6's favor.

Owned for 50K , commute mostly fwy, overall 19 mpg. I've seen 23 on a long trip at 90 mph,
16 on a tank spent entirely in LA. Moderate to aggressive driving, your wife will do better.
