Scary Statistics from the Rubber Mfr's Association
* Only 14 percent of drivers properly check their tire inflation pressure. Properly checking tires means checking at least once a month before tires have been driven even a mile and inflating them to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure, not the pressure listed on the tire sidewall.
* 45 percent of drivers wrongly believe that if they are taking a trip with a fully loaded vehicle that they are better off if their tires are a little bit underinflated.
* Nearly 7 out of 10 drivers don't know how to tell if their tires are bald.
* 71 percent of drivers do not check their tire pressure in their spare tire.

80 percent of statistics are bull****.
However, I do believe that a significant number of vehicles on the road today are mechanically unsafe. And following the ol' stupid is as stupid does, their operators are similar liabilities.
The bottom line: keep your own in order, and always expect the unexpected from the "other" guy

No suprise. I'm a tire pressure junkie and I always see plenty of cars
out there running around with low tires just in the course of a 20 minute trip. I'm not talking a little low sometimes. I'm talking sidewall folded over and about to peel off the rim low. How can people miss that ?

pressure in my full size spare was 24 last week.
hadn't checked it in about a year.
I personally drive around with a compressor and tire gauge at all times.
