Default Secondary Air Injection Pump Noise...

About a year ago my CEL came on, after fooling around with it I ended up having the secondary air injection pump changed out. When it failed it just quit, no sounds or drama other than the CEL.

Every morning when I start the car I hear the pump run for about a minute, then I hear it wind down.

Yesterday, it was a different sound. Louder and raspier. This morning it was really loud and a slightly different sound. I could hear it from 100 feet away. It had a throaty whine, like a turbofan engine. Again, it wound down after the normal amount of time. No CEL, no difference in drivability.

Anyone heard this before? Obviously something isn't right. I've talked to the shop that replaced it - they'll take care of me - but is the pump failing or is there something else that could be going on?

Default I started hearing similar noise during cold morning start-ups.

The noise will go away after the engine warmed up. How can I tell if it's the secondary injection pump?
Mine's also a 2000 but w/over 90k mi.

Default If it shuts off after about a minute of warm up, that's probably it.

Sucks, because the part is $600+.

Default Make sure the pump air intake hose is firmly attached to the bottom of the air box...

If the hose comes off of the air box, it could make a louder noise, suck up dirt, small rocks, etc. and eventually fail.

Default Ahhh, you know, that could be it. The sound would be right...

and my GF (I wasn't there) popped the hood and said the noise was coming from the top of the bipipe area.

Thanks for the tip.

Default Well, the pump is the problem...

Started the car with the hood open. The noise is coming from the area behind the bipipe/at the firewall/left of the coolant tank.

As the pump quit, I could hear the noise slow down. It's like a light scraping sound. So it looks like it will be a new pump for me.
