Default Shift Point

The manual on my car says that it has the most horsepower at 6000 rpm. If am trying to get the most power out of my car should I be trying to shift at exactly 6000 or a little after?

Default Most common way is using power curves and gear ratios to compute each point.

It's not the same RPM every time.

If you think about it, with each change in gear ratio the engine RPM falls from one gear to the next and lands at different RPMs. Therefore, shifting at only one RPM from each gear will land you at different RPMs each time with the potential of not maximizing the use of your power curve.

Do a google search for shift points, horsepower and torque to see what you come up with. There are several schools of thought on this.
