Here is a Mac GPS software publisher where they discuss GPS hardware compatibility--maybe you can glean some useful info from it.

Mac GPS FAQ

I recently purchased a Garmin GPSMap 76S (not a Mac user tho, sorry). It's got pretty much all of the features that you'd want other than built in routing(which seems to only be on higher end units). The screen is a decent size and very readable in the car. I don't have it mounted yet but have no problems getting satellite reception with it sitting on the passenger seat(down to ~10m accuracy). One huge plus for this unit is you can use an external antenna with it which really opens up the mounting possibilities. Plus it works well as a hand held and is water proof(even floats!) if you plan on using it for hiking or whatever.

http://joe.mehaffey.com/</a
