You want the sidewall and wheel lip to be vertical/in-line with each other
for the best handling characteristics. Remember that if the tire has to angle inwards to meet the rim, you have more play in the sidewall. That means less precise handling.
Your overall rolling diameter should not vary more than 3% front to rear, or the Torsen may be damaged.
Better to spend your money buying the best tires you can for your intended use, and not buy a lower grade tire, just to fit into a budget for wider tires.

Actually, for best performance, you would put the wider tires in front on a quattro!
Really. MTM did this on their RSR S2 a few years back. It makes the handling more neutral, offsetting the forward weight bias that quattros have.
You definitely DO NOT want the wider tires in back. It will make the car understeer even worse than it already does. The reason RWD cars put wider tires in back is to maximize traction. Quattros don't have problems putting the power to the ground, so all four tires can be the same size.
With an ideal AWD car with a 50/50 wieght bias, all four tires are the same size.
With a quattro, you MUST make sure the diameter of all four tires is the same. Width can vary, but not the diameter.
