been pointed towards the sky since at least before I bought the car because I don't remember ever replacing it. I just want to make sure that now I finally have a filter that actually is filtering the air.

Default Yes, the arrow should point in the direction of air flow. However, leave it as it is.

If you turn it around now, all the crap on the outside will then be on the inside of the filter and get sucked into the cabin!

Maybe time to get a new one and fit that one correctly?

Default Depends on what you think he means by "air inlet"...

Gary's been around for awhile, so I'm assuming he means the source of the incoming air. In which case, the arrow should point away from it. Since all cars don't share a common route, "towards the car" and "towards the sky" are not always applicable.

So should the arrow be pointing in towards where the air is flowing into the heating system correct?

Yes, Luvnhate probably said it best, arrow points in the direction of airflow.
