Snow Tires for 2001 2.7t (17 inch wheels)
I live in Massachusetts and got the 17 inch wheels with Bridgestone Potenzas 225 45 17. I'm not quite as aggressive a driver as most posters with similar equipment but I prefer sure handling to comfort. It's finally time to order snow tires, and I think I want the H rated Blizzaks, based on reviews here and elsewhere. They offer 235 and 215 in 45-17 spec. Will the 235s fit? Is it worth the $18 premium over the 215?

Totally agree with two previous replies. I just want to add that recommended rim size for winter tires is 6Jx16 ET40 5/112. By the way, it could be cheaper than set of 17 inch winter tires. And do not install winter tires wider than summer ones. Your size is 215/55/16 or 225/50/16. If you don't want to install aftermarket rims you have two ways:
1. buy Audi recommended aluminum rims 4B0 601 025H (about $250 each)
2. buy A8 winter tires steel rims 4D0 601 025. The parameters of this rim are very close to recommended - 7Jx16 ET42 5/112. So, that only one inch in rim width and two millimeters in offset.

Options ...
Dan,
I updated the table in the link to include the additional sizes in your message.
I'd recommend the 235/45-17 rather than the 215/45-17 for only one reason; the load rating of the latter tire may be marginal for the A6. You could raise tire pressures to compensate, but this would sacrifice some ride comfort.
Don't worry about 235 being too wide for snow, a Winter tire like the Blizzak will perform admirably (as does the 245/45-18 Pirelli 210 on my S8). As an alternative, you might also consider the 225/45-17 Dunlop M2.
Note also that the data in the table is "zeroed" around the 255/35-17 of the 4.2. Just subtract the values for any tire you're considering from the values for the 225/45-17.
BTW: Stuffing all the data in the table into a 640x480 jpg is starting to push the limits of readability. If I add many more tire sizes, I may have to consider submitting a Tech article to AudiWorld.

A6 tire options, updated 1/20/02
