So I took my car to a volkswagon dealership to get my front brake pads
replaced because the light went on. I pick up the car and the brake light is still on. So I asked the guy why and he said the rears are setting it off. I thought someone said there were only sensors on the front? Any ideas to why the light is still on?

Did they put pads on without the sensor connector?
You can complete the brake pad circuit with a couple of paper clips or similar to turn the light off. I'd want the correct pads with sensors installed if I paid for the job though.
AFAIK, there are no sensors in the rears.

Low pad warning sensors are for the front INNER pads only...
...if they installed pads for you in the front, ask them:
1) did they use OEM pads with the wear sensors
2) if #1 above is yes, can they check the connections of the sensors to amke sure the tech did the install properly
3) If the wear sensors are defective, will they warranty the work and order replacement parts?
If you have a good jack (not that cr@ppy thing in the trunk, but a good jack) you could just check yourself. Jack up one corner in front, remove the wheel, look at the wire leading to the inner pad of the caliper. Is it connected?
