So is it possible to put a manual tranny into the RS6...
and if so, what would that cost, and what kind of transmission could be used to handle all that power? Anyone have any thoughts?

In a word, yes......
The 01E 6 speed as used in all the S cars will physically fit the C5 chassis as well as bolt up to the 4.2 block. However, the transmission is not rated for the torque of the RS6. The torque limit must be close, though, since they did use it for the RS4 and they always leave some safety margin.
A manual RS6 would be simply phenomenal. In addition to the additional ratio, the transmission itself weighs about 100 lbs less than the automatic.

Yes. All it takes is money. You'll need the trans, wiring harness, pedal box,
both a tranny ecu, and a ( custom ? ) engine ecu that can talk to each other. Not sure what happens to the ESP.
If like other conversions, it's in the $10K range. Depends on cost of replacement tranny and how complete you want the integration.

"A manual RS6 would be simply phenomenal." - only in certain areas
I'm sure a stick on an RS 6 would be great fun to drive round a track, and would probably do a lot of leaving other vehicles behind from standing starts, but I'm no so sure it would be the good all-rounder the RS 6 is.
What's the 6th gear ratio on the 6-speed box? What kind of RPMs in 6th are needed to acheive 100mph? In the RS 6, 3300rpm (half way to redline) is 100mph. In the A8, it's a measly 2800rpm in 6th!
I'd rather see a 6-speed Tip from an A8 put into an RS 6, or a 4.2 turbo engine into an A8 thank you! :-)

converting to a manual would really screw up the ESP
The ESP controller looks at a couple of signals from the transmission such as gear engaged and if a shift is planned. The ESP will also alter transmission shifting if it is active. If gear ratios change (final drive, or individual ratio) that would also change the torque calculations leading to worse performance. If those signal weren't present, and I doubt there would be any way to ever make them be, it would either not work as well or not at all. Not that ESP can't work with a manual, it is just the the tuning in a TCS or ESP system is very dependant on transmission response.

Whoops, 0.684... forgot the 3+ variants
