So riddle me this: Why does the new Passat have a more potent engine than the C6 3.2?

VW: 3.6l - 280 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
Audi: 3.2l - 255 hp and 243 lb-ft.
Granted, the Audi peak torque comes on sooner, but still.

Market segmentation is a leading cause of this lopsided horsepower situation. The VR 3.6 is the largest engine upgrade available for the Passat while the 3.2 is the smallest engine choice for the A6 (NA only). The powerful engine options found in the Nissan Maxima, Honda Accord, Toyota Avalon and the host of domestics has lead VW to offer a more potent engine to better meet comsumer demands in this class.
Consider that MB's sister company offers a much more power engine, the HEMI, in the Chrysler 300 than in the E-class. As some may recall the Chrysler 300 is a rebodied previous generation E-class platform.
The would be cause for alarm if Audi offered less horsepower overall than VW. That is if Audi did not offer the 4.2 variant.

If the A6 had a 3.6 option and a 4.2 option, the base model would be more expensive for one thing, and less people would be buying the 4.2 since the 3.6 is nearly as strong. The A6 wouldn't be as competively priced with this setup.
The Passat needs the stronger engine in order to compete with other cars in its segment since there is no V8 option available.
