this sounds like my problem, but its TT what i found in search
"Although, my problem was intermittent starting failure. How will I know if this actually fixed my issue? The engine started normally the last five times I tried it (in my garage). The failure to start was completely unpredictable -- one minute it would start, a few hours later it wouldn't, a few hours later it would." My problem is more like, if i let the car sit for about 2 hours, never if car sits longer. This is a common problem on B3/B4's
The sensor is read at startup only, once running it's just there. Shut the car off and it immediately won't start. Let it sit for awhile then it starts again. The sensor gets hot, fails, then once it cools off it works again.

Does it crank but no start or is it a no crank thing.
No Crank and TIP----likely your multifunction or ignition switch.
Crank but no start----likely coolant temp sensor. especially if it always starts first thing in the morning but fails to restart after warm.

just replace my temp. sensor, issue was there before and after. Its crank, never start on the first
try, but second try its takes time, but it will fired up. Ignition switch was replaced too.
