So I am in the process...long long process of replacing the front outer CV joint. The whole of the process thus far has been spent trying to get the f***in upper pinch bolt out.
I've read that it doens't have to be removed, but my understanding is that removing this bolt, as opposed to the LCA/sway bars, means I don't need an alignment post CV joint. Thoughts?
Bottom line, i've decided to go the "spray in the liquid wrench for a heck of a long time" then try again. I been working somewhat w/ heat, PB blaster, 70 ft/lb air gun...more thoughts?
So I am going to use the new collar bolt from my replacement CV joint. But that means that I will need another new bolt (and only the bolt) when I actually get the CV replaced.
Sources/PN...?
thanks

Gotta tell you though, using a air hammer with a punch die at 120 psi drove mine right out.

I have replacements for the pinch bolt...looking for the big ol' wheel bearing to drive axle bolt.
can you give more detail, about how yo uremoved the pinch bolt?
I have been going w/ a ratchet on the bolt head...not so much luck
regular hammer on threaded end...no luck
i don't own air hammer...it seems that they only come w/ a chisel bit, whic does little in my mind.

If the bolt you're after is the one I think it is then I have seen them from the Internet guys but, for convenience, you'll probably be best to just get it from a dealer.

parts house as Fixed wing said.
Details on the pinch bolt..
I used the punch I have that came out of a kit I have to drive it as far as I could. Then inserted another bolt a little smaller and drove it all the way through. See kit in URL.
Air hammers are not that expensive and if you have a compressor its a great tool to have. Some kits even come with the tool.<ul><li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Porter-Cable-PTA5-Piece-Chisel-Set/dp/B000256RXW/ref=pd_sim_dbs_hi_title_1">kit</a></li></ul>

I just need a "spare" 17mm in case I have
to use the one from my CV kit to make the car
driveable by Monday...without having actually done the CV replacement.
I picked up an air hammer tonight. Hopefully
I can shoot that pinch bolt out and get to work on the CV tomorrow.

I've re-used them. I have also seen where they have stretched and you cannot. Then they become difficult to turn.

I'm still not having too much luck with the UCA and pinch bolts.
I'm debating going after the LCA bolts (more room for breaker if needed).
I wanted to avoid having an alignment, as my local VW dealer doesn't work on Audi anymore.
Does anyone know if unbolting LCAs is going to botch the current alignment setup?
Alternatively, is it easier to remove the entire shaft to get to the out CV?
thanks

remove the axle so you can do the CV.
I've been through the process (oredeal) youa re going through now, with the same results- couldn't budge the pinch bolt, so went to LCA route with no issues. Just takes some time to get the bolt out - IIRC it was 18MM socket/wrench.
No alignment issues at all, even 12 months after doing the job.
