Default Starting issue

I am searching the archives, any ssuggestion on search terms appreciated...

The Issue:
This has only happened twice, once 18 months ago, and again yesterday. What happens is, I turn the key and nothing happens. I have power. I checked the battery and is is fully charged.

I rolled down the window and turned the key to the ACC position. I heard a faint buzz, like an electric discharge, and a click like I would think a solenoid would make. When I turn the key to the start position, I could hear a faint click, and then nothing.

I tried the key 5 more times, and on the 5th try, the engine started. I has started several times since then. I have a diagnostic reader, I am going to check it for code tonight (I hope). Any ideas on what to look for?

I had a ford truck that did the same thing and it turned out to be a dead spot on the starter. The fix was to replace the starter (I used to be able to whack the starter with a wrench, and it would start right up)

Anybody heard of Audi starters having dead spots? Any ideas on what might be causing this? Lastly, anybody have suggestions for good terms to put into a search of the forum archives?

Thanks.

Default I'd probably start with a new ignition switch.

Audi starters have a good track record.

You won't find anything useful for codes.

Default 3rd on ignitino switch. BTW

Its the electrical part, NOT the mechanical part. Its an $40 dealer part, or $20 from a 3rd party. You can do the job yourself, several people have posted instructions on the internet. Check the usual suspects. I have only done the job on C4s - not C5s.

Default Ignition switch, like others say, or starter motor is possible too.

You need to figure out somehow, if the click is the starter motor solenoid. If so, it's the motor (sticking or worn out brush is what causes it).

Best diagnostic would be a DVM across the solenoid terminals.

Default OEM is probably the way to go. Aftermarket switches are usually junk

This is based on C4 experience, not sure if the C5 is any different.

Default Welll, let me tell you a story....

On my mom's C4 (1995) A6, i had two switches replaced professionally , by her long-term indie. Both were german-made, Audi-stamped parts. Both died within 3-9 months.

I then bought one from GPR to do myself. I was quite annoyed when it came with the proper Audi part number, but no Audi stamp on the housing, and a"made in china" stamp instead. Maybe its my magical install abilities, but that one has gone 2+ years trouble free.

Of course the original went 8+ years.

So dont pre-judge them too much,

Grant
