Default Steering Rack Question - Shake in Steering Wheel (long)

For some time now I have had a rotational shake in the steering wheel of my 2002 A6 3.0 quattro with 60K at speeds above 52MPH, can tend to feel it more when cornering but the problem is intermitent. My dealer recently diagnosed a bad steering rack module as the cause, evidentally the module is "over compensating," slightly causing the steering rack pressure to build more than it should one on side and then rapidly switching and building too much pressure on the other side, back and forth, back and forth, thus the rotational shake in the steering wheel. The front end is tight, wheels Road Force balanced perfectly.

The module is built into the steering rack, dealer estimate for replacement of the steering rack is around $1,900 for parts and labor (almost 50/50). They also stated that the problem would not cause wear on the front end nor is it a safety issue.

It is a bother to me but is certainly not worth $1,900 to fix. This is my 3rd Audi, one of the reasons I love them is the solid feel and smooth dfriving experience - this is dissappointing to say the least. Any ideas or suggestions?

Default Sounds like dealer BS to me! Have him show, further describe the rack "module" to you...

Other than a sevotronic solenoid valve, there is no such module. Probabilities are that you have an alignment problem and/or a loose something or other suspension or tie rod joint.

Default Have you checked the usual suspects?

bent rims; slightly mismounted rims (happens all the time); OOR tires; sloppy TREs;

All these are commonplace, although often overlooked.

Magical steering racks are nto commonplace. Maybe so, but my gut is squirming.

I am told that the rims are true. What is the best way to check on mismounted rims? I have had them on and off several times, vibration has not changed.

Default I had a slightly bent rim which really threw out my car! While having the wheels checked found bent

rim on the rear! Had it fixed and tires balanced - all good again!!

Default re: mismounted rims

What I mean by mis mounted is either inconsistent torque or dirt on the hub. If you have dismounted and re-mounted with no change, its unlikely.

I find many shops cant spot a bent rim when they see it.
