Default Steering Wheel Leather Melting

Yes, it is melting. When I got my A6, the wheel had a little part of the leather on top melted. Now it is about 1/3 of the wheel that is melted and more of it seems to be melting, and fast! The car doesn't sit in much sun or heat, since we don't get much of that here in NY, so I am not sure exactly why it is melting. But I do know that other A6's I have looked at had melted steering wheels also. My 100CS, which has a different wheel, isn't melted and is two years older.

I'm considering getting the wheel re-wrapped, but don't know where to get it done or how to do it, or the costs involved. I can scrub the melted parts off, but then having your hand on the wheel for more than about a minute results in a black mark... well actually you get a black mark on your hand now anyway.

Has anybody dealt with this (searched archives and found nothing) and what might I try as a solution?

(photos to follow)

Thanks...
>>Muhammad

Muhammad, do you have a warranty from the dealer? Maybe you should go to him, this shouldn't happen.

Default Leather melts?

I guess that explains all the flesh-exposed cows I see ;-).

New steering wheel from a junk yard (or an aftermarket one) or a steering wheel cover seem like the most obvious choices. Hope all else is well.

Default My '96 A4 did the same thing...

although, I never thought it was melting. It seemed more like a deterioration of the leather from a lot of use. I never did figure out what it was....sorry I can't be more helpful.

Default No, no!! I don't go to dealers for anything now!!

Warranty is aftermarket and doesn't cover cosmetic stuff.

I stand clear of the dealers around here now! (lessons learned!)
>>Muhammad

Default I guess so... or just deteriorates

Perfect excuse to get an S6 steering wheel... oooh S6 wheel wasted on an old, slow A6!! I'll probably look into covering it with something and save the money for the real S6 next year.
>>Muhammad

Default Re: Simple Fix....

Muhammad, you can buy a leather steering cover stiched over your existing one.. Not only does it look nicer, but also gives you a chunkier feel... Many sports car owners have done this to their cars to get a nicer grip.. Any good auto parts catalog should carry one.. Some dealers may even do this for you.. It only takes about 1/2 of labor to stitch the wheel.. Any good mechanic can do this job.. It's a simple fix...
